Life in the Spirit

• walking in the power and leadership of the Holy Spirit, while bearing spiritual fruit and utilizing spiritual gifts.

  • Jesus was leaving, but He didn’t leave us without help!

  • Helper = paraklētos - summoned, called to one's side, esp. called to one's aid. One who pleads another's cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant, an advocate. One who pleads another's cause with one, an intercessor. In the widest sense, a helper, aider, assistant

Friendship

• Holy Spirit “…is the loving, self-communicating, out-fanning and out-pouring presence of the eternal divine life of the triune God. By the Spirit, God draws near to the creature and mediates a knowledge of divinity in a hundred thousand ways.” - Jürgen Moltmann

Conviction

• John 16:8-9

  • We are completely dependent on the Holy Spirit bearing fruit in our gospel work and in our lives.

New Life

• Acts 2:37-38

Empowered Life

  • Power = dynamis (Greek: δύναμις) strength, ability of power, especially inherent power, residing in something (or someone) by virtue of its (or their) nature.

• Galatians 5:25 - If we live by the spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit

  • Keep in step = stoicheo (Greek: στοιχέω) -literally, to march in military rank; to proceed in a row as the march of a soldier. Figuratively, to conform (in virtue, piety)

Gifted Life

  • We are strengthened by each other’s gifts.

Ralph Waldo Emerson - “trust thyself”

• Proverbs 3:5 - don’t do that…

  • Self-reliance limits our spiritual growth

  • Psalm 37:5 - “Depend on the Lord. Trust in him, and he will help you.”

  • Jeremiah 9:23 - Don’t boast about yourself

  • Philippians 4:11-13 - it’s not about our strength or ability.

Spiritual growth is not about personal willpower, it’s about surrender.

What do we trust in?

His Forgiveness

• Luke 18:9-14

  • …everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

• Romans 3:11-12

  • Our own goodness will never be enough.

• Philippians 3:9

  • Our righteousness comes from him!

• It all goes back to what God has done for us.

His Empowerment

• 1 Chronicles 16:11

  • Seek God

• Acts 1:8a

  • Empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  • dynamos (δύναμαι)= able. to be able, have power whether by virtue of one's own ability and resources, or of a state of mind, or through favourable circumstances, or by permission of law

• The same power that raised Christ from the dead empowers you today!

His Wisdom

• 1 Corinthians 3:19

  • The wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.

• James 3:17

  • The wisdom from above is pure, peace loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy, unwavering, without pretense…

His Provision

• Psalm 34:19 - “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord rescues from them all.”

• 1 Peter 5:7 - cast all your anxieties on God..

• 2 Corinthians 1:8-9

  • We even despaired off life itself!

  • …so that we would not trust ourselves.

• His provision is better than our attempts at self preservation

Disdain

• This teaching is hard to accept.

  • John 6:60

  • The hardness was in their hearts.

• John 6:61 - Jesus, knowing that his disciples were grumbling asked them, “does this offend you?”.

  • skandalizō (Greek) - to trigger the trap. To cause someone to stumble or trip.

    • They felt trapped by this teaching.

Desertion

• John 6:66 - From that moment many of his disciples turned back and no longer accompanied him.

• John 6:67: So Jesus said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?”

Devotion

• John 6:68 ...Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life.

• John 6:69: We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

  • ginōskō (Greek): to know experiential, in contrast to oida, which means to know intuitively or perceive.

Treachery

• John 6:70: Jesus replied to them, “Didn’t I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.”

  • The most negative thing said about Judas in the four gospels.

Key passage: John 6:1-15

BIG Needs; REAL Needs.

• John 6:5

  • Nearly 20,000 people, in need of a meal.

  • Jesus asks, “where could we get food to feed these people?”

    • A question to test Phillip.

Seemingly limited resources 

• John 6:7 - it would cost half a year’s wages to give all of these people a small snack!

• John 6:8-9 - Here’s a little bit of food, but it’s nothing compared to the size of the crowd.

A little is a LOT in the hands of Jesus

• John 6:11 - they had as much as they wanted, they were full, satisfied

Jesus involved his followers

• John 6:12-13 - from doubting to active participants.

Always on Mission

• John 6:15

  • the crowd wanted a miracle worker, a king, a new Moses. That wasn’t what Jesus came for. He had a different mission.

Do we put limits on our faith, church, outreach, ministry? Or do we truly believe that Jesus can do a lot with the little we’ve been given?
