Calvary Baptist Church

Spring All-Church Prayer Focus

Join us as we pray together as a church for the months of April, May, June.

Primary Focus

Pray that we would worship god in spirit and in truth.

Key Scripture

John 4:23 “But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him..”

Ways To Pray

Meditate on each of God’s attributes revealed in Scripture and praise Him for them.

Specifically name God’s many blessings to you (starting with your salvation) and thank Him for them.

Pray that the Spirit would help you resist the tendency to “go through the motions” during worship, but to respond authentically with your full heart.

Pray that the Spirit would fill you with the desire and joy to submit to God in obedience.

Kids Pray Too

Thank God for specific ways He has blessed you.

Ask God to help you show your love for Him by obeying His commands.

Read the Bible In 2025

The start of a new year is a great time to begin new habits (and to strengthen existing habits)! At Calvary, we believe that as disciples of Christ we are called to a practice of Bible Engagement: learning to know, love, and follow the teaching of Scripture. As we help people follow Jesus together, we’re inviting the Calvary family to read the Bible together in 2025.

If you’re interested in joining, we’ll be following the One Year Bible plan beginning January 1 and will offer periodic check-ins throughout the year to help you stay on track. Each day’s 15-minute reading covers portions from the Old & New Testaments, as well as Psalms and Proverbs, and will allow you to read the whole of Scripture over the course of one year.

How to read

  1. In your own Bible. Download a copy of the One Year Bible Reading Plan and follow along in your own copy of the text.

  2. Purchase a One Year Bible. The One Year Bible is available in several translations and formats and runs around $10-17 on Amazon. Here’s a link to some of our favorite options.

  3. In the Bible app. YouVersions’ Bible app has an integration option with the One Year Bible reading plan. In the app go to PLANS, search “One Year Bible”, and choose the option with the One Year Bible logo. If you’d like to join the CBC discussion group in the app, contact jordan@cbcjoy.org for an invite!

Be His Light - Christmas Outreach Opportunities

As followers of Christ, we are called to be HIS light to the world around us (Matthew 5:14). We have some different opportunities to share the light of Christ with those in our community this Christmas season. We hope you and your family can participate in one or more of these options as we strive to bring Christ’s light to a dark world as we celebrate Christmas together.

Christmas In Plymouth

Christmas In Plymouth is a community-wide event in downtown Plymouth that will take place December 12-14. Volunteers are needed on Thursday, December 12 to distribute hand-warmers and invitations to our Christmas Eve Service to people attending the event.

pride for parents - gifts

Gifts are needed for the Pride For Parents Christmas Store. Stop by the wooden tree in the Lobby and grab a tag (or tags) to purchase coats, underwear, socks, toys, or to even contribute extra funds for this special event hosted by Central Detroit Christian. All items are due back by December 8.

Pride for parents - store volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help set up the Christmas Store on Friday, December 13 in the evening, and to assist shoppers during the event on Saturday, December 14 during the day - all onsite at CDC. This is a great way to get more hands-on in serving our friends in Detroit.

Thanksgiving 2024

As followers of Christ, the Thanksgiving celebration is a reminder to praise our God with gratitude for who He is and what He’s done. We do this through worship and fellowship together. Here’s a look at what’s happening at Calvary this Thanksgiving Week.

Thanksgiving Worship Night

Join us Sunday, November 24, at 6:30 p.m. for an evening of worship through song as we remember God’s goodness to us as His children. All ages welcome!

Prayer, Praise, & Pie

Calvary Students (6th-12th grade) are invited to a special Wednesday Night at the Barn on Thanksgiving Eve (November 27) at 6:30 p.m. for a time of games, prayer, worship, and delicious desserts, led by our Student Leaders. All other regular Wednesday activities (Calvary Kids and Adults) will not meet on this day.

Turkey trot & turkey bowl

All are invited to participate in a special 5k walk/run through our community on Friday, November 29, starting at 9:00 a.m. All ages and abilities (and even strollers) are welcome! The race will begin and end at the Barn.

Then at 10:00 a.m., Calvary Students and Leaders are invited to participate in the long-standing tradition of the Turkey Bowl flag football tournament.

christmas decorating

We’ll be decorating our Auditorium and Lobby for the Christmas season on Saturday, November 30, starting at 10:00 a.m. Many hands make quick work! We especially need helpers who can do heavy-lifting and navigate stairs and ladders. RSVP to emma@cbcjoy.org if you’re planning to join us!

Calvary Kids Adventure Days

what are adventure days?

Calvary Kids Adventure Days began last summer with the intent to take the heart of Vacation Bible School out into our community and to better connect with families. They are designed for elementary/preschool aged kids and their parents or caregivers to enjoy some summer fun in a local park AND have an encounter with the Gospel. We had a great response last year and are excited to do it again!

This year our three Adventure Days will be held at Plymouth Township Park (McClumpha) during the evening (4:00-7:00 p.m.) on three consecutive Mondays where we’ll be learning that God is a friend who’s real, a friend forever, and a friend for everyone!

There are 5 ways you can get involved:

#1 Come! Especially if you have kids in your home, we hope that you’ll plan to come and participate and be ready to meet new people and make some new connections.

#2 Invite! We have some flyers out at the Guest Services desk and a Facebook Event for you to share with your friends, neighbors, co-workers - even if you don’t have kids in your home, you can still help spread the word!

#3 *NEW* Donate! Sign up here to help feed our volunteer team!

#4 Volunteer! Many hands are needed for these events to be successful! If you’d like to volunteer at one or more Adventure Day, sign up here!

#5 Pray! Be praying for the kids and families that will come - that good connections will be made and that their hearts will be open to the good news of the gospel!

Elder Letter 12.20.23

Dear Calvary Family,

Merry Christmas! What a joy it is to take time to reflect on God’s greatest Gift, Emmanuel, God with us!

As a church family, we’ve seen God with us consistently throughout this ministry year. You may recall in June we provided clarity and reaffirmed our mission to be a disciple-making ministry by “helping people follow Jesus together.”  Specifically as elders, we outlined four priorities: implementation, Constitutional & Policy Manual review, transparent & timely communication, and progressing our role within the Calvary family. Through almost six months of our ministry year, we’ve made progress in all these areas; some more than others.

Relative to implementation, the Calvary staff is heavily engaged in assessing our various ministry strategies and programming, evaluating effectiveness through the lens of being and making disciples. Budget constraints continue to be a concern, but we remain steadfast to minimize costs and trust God’s faithfulness through His people to meet our most critical needs.

Reviewing our Constitution and policies has proven challenging; however, we have identified several areas that need evaluating, updating and/or adjusting. Our desire is to focus more attention to this area in the second half of the ministry year.

We’ve received a great deal of positive comments relative to our communications, visibility, and shepherding. As a result of your feedback in June, these areas are where we’ve spent the majority of our energy. We’ve been especially intentional through various channels to ensure you are aware of who we are, increasing our visibility and accessibility, as well as sharing what we’re working on and how it fits into the mission God has for us. We still have work to do and realize this will be an on-going effort, so we will continue to leverage multiple channels to ensure you have confidence in the leadership as we continue to move forward.

We plan to invite the entire Calvary family to a special evening discussion where we will provide greater detail into these areas and solicit your feedback. We’re currently targeting early February, so look for an invitation soon.

We indeed have much to be thankful for and we give God all the glory. Praise Him for His precious Gift and for His faithfulness to us all!

Merry Christmas,

2024 Bible Reading Resources

2024 Bible Reading Resources

Have you been struggling to read the Bible regularly? Are you looking to encounter Scripture in a fresh way? Spending regular time reading, studying, and listening to Scripture helps infuse our minds with truth about the God we worship and how we are to live as we follow Jesus together. The start of a new calendar year is a great time to consider a Bible reading plan or tool to help you better engage with Scripture. There are tons of options out there, but here are a few of our favorites:

The Bible Project – Digital Bible study with video integration & more
Bible Ref – Digital commentary tool Dwell – Audio Bible App
ESV Scripture Journals – Print resource for personal/group study
Foundations – Simplified family study tool
Meet Me In The Bible Cards – Personal/group study tool

The Bible Project App

What we like: The group you know from their engaging animated teaching videos has an app that teaches you HOW to read the Bible WHILE you read the Bible. Pointing out how to identify key words and concepts, literary styles and themes, The Bible Project focuses on the Bible as one unified story that points to Christ. All their videos are conveniently linked right in the text to provide additional context to your reading.

Bonus: Expansions to the app this year include the Bible Project full video library, full podcast library, and the Bible Project Classroom, which offers free, self-paced, graduate-level classes to help foster deeper engagement with Scripture. Find it: bibleproject.com or download the free app (Apple / Google Play)

BIBLE REF Website & App

What we like: A new resource from gotquestions.com, this is a free, commentary study tool built around the principles of Biblical authority, accessibility, and discipleship. It offers a deep look at Scripture from a book, chapter, and verse-by-verse perspective in an easy-to-read format. You can also view selected verses in multiple translations side-by-side. It’s not yet complete – they’re adding a few chapters of different books every couple of weeks.

Bonus: Their monthly blog posts offer Biblical perspective on current societal and world events (website and monthly newsletter only). Find it: Free at bibleref.com or on the app (Apple / Google Play)

Calvary Elders Statement on Prop 3

Dear Calvary Church Family:

As you are most likely aware, Election Day is coming soon, on Tuesday, November 8. For those of us in Michigan, that includes casting our vote on Proposal 3. We (The Elders) have received questions from several people in the CBC family about this proposal. If you are not familiar with it, Proposal 3 is a ballot initiative that would expand abortion “rights” and, depending on actual implentation resulting from the proposal’s passage, open the door for other practices. While we believe that our right to vote is one that is valuable, we also recognize the potential danger in over-politicizing God’s Church. At CBC, we are not committed to or in the habit of endorsing a particular party, candidate, or ballot initiative. Instead, our allegiance is to God’s Word, His Will, and His Way for our individual and collective lives.

As Calvary’s Confession of Faith, preaching and teaching, and ministry partnerships (e.g., Care Net, Hope Clinic) clearly articulate and indicate, we unequivocally believe in and celebrate the sanctity of life, from conception to death. We absolutely believe that God created the first and every individual human being in His image and likeness (Psalm 139:13-14, Genesis 1:27) and loves each one and everyone intimately (John 3:16).

As followers of Jesus, we are called to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40), and to seek justice for those who have no voice (Proverbs 31:8-9, Psalm 82:3-4). It is our belief that this calling compels us to stand up for and protect the lives of the marginalized and vulnerable, including those not yet born. In addition to its damaging effects on women, abortion is the termination of an innocent life, a violation of Scriptural truth, and we stand in opposition to it

As servant-leaders in our church family, we continue to pray that each of us would embrace Biblical truth and God’s mission for our lives. If you have been affected in any way by abortion, please know that we love you, and so does Jesus. We will walk with you in genuine relationship and heartfelt compassion. Because God Loves, Calvary Loves! If we can be of any further assistance, or if you have questions about having a relationship with God, please don’t hesitate to contact us(elderboard@cbcjoy.org).

New Adult Elective Study Offering: Ambassadors For Life

Making Life-Affirming Disciples is a practical, nonpolitical, gospel-centered course to equip Christ followers at a church to offer support and discipleship to women and men who face challenging circumstances during pregnancy and child-rearing. Pregnancy Centers seek to bring men and women to Christ, but local churches are vital for providing long-term discipleship and support to the abortion vulnerable and the post-abortive. The class is designed to draw us into greater reliance on God and intimacy with Jesus and provide our church with a Christlike response to abortion.

This 12 week course will be offered at Calvary this fall on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. beginning September 11 with leaders, James & Kristi Abernathy. Please pre-register below so we can have materials in place for our first meeting. The class will meet in the Church Office Conference Room.

Open Table Update - What's For Supper?

What’s for supper?

As a mama of three, this can be a daunting question at times. When ‘supper’ takes place in the Lord’s Name though, it is a beautiful, redemptive, and intentional invitation. Each year, God presents us with over 1000 opportunities to gather in His Name with others. It’s a unique time where we can both rest and receive nourishment in the Spirit with all people. In some ways, it is also a calling from Him to be a part of the invitation process.

Through the Calvary Open Table Ministry, food has been a unique way to connect with others, build relationship, and be the Light of Jesus. God continues to provide for the physical needs of people in our community, and we have had the joy of being His hands and feet. We have invited people to join us on our campus for a hot meal and then choose blessing bags filled with personal hygiene items and cleaning products to take home.

The Open Table Ministry is modeled after Jesus’ invitation to all people to join Him in communion. So, the challenge stands: who is He calling you to invite? Is it your neighbor? Is it a co-worker? We have connected with several key families through this meal—we’ve heard their personal stories, prayed for them, and celebrated big moments. Open Table happens on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Ask the Lord, who are you calling? Who are you inviting? How can I be used by You?

To contribute food items for our January Open Table on January 13, sign up here.

If you’d like to join in fellowship with those attending Open Table, or if you’d like some flyers to help spread the word about Open Table, please email Bobbie Lee Barr (bobbielee@cbcjoy.org).

They are foundational to integrating into and being a part of the Calvary family. If you have never been a part of an ABF, we encourage you to consider taking this next step as we begin the fall season. If you have been a part of an ABF and have experienced the benefit of these groups, we’d encourage you to consider inviting a friend who does not attend Calvary to your ABF as a chance to connect them to Calvary in a less formal, smaller format. Elder Update: Removal of Remaining Covid Protocols

Hello, Calvary Family:

We pray that this correspondence finds you doing well. Fifteen months ago, we entered into the reality of the eventual worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. It proved to be an extremely challenging experience, in many ways and on multiple levels. Nearly all of us were affected, at home, school, work and beyond.

These months have taken a toll on us, for sure, and life at CBC has been no exception. As we begin to emerge from pandemic status, it is good to remember that though our lives and ministry may have been changed, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8, ESV). Amen!

We thank you, sincerely, for your continued patience, grace, cooperation and perseverance. And though our entire church family perhaps did not always see eye to eye on every decision about safety protocols and the like, may we remember that as the daughters and sons of God, we are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28, CSB). Amen, again.

With that being said, we’d also like to inform you that the Elders have taken action to remove all remaining coronavirus-related safety protocols currently in place at Calvary, effective this Sunday, June 13. This applies to all church ministry events, programs, classes and services. As you prepare to attend, we simply ask that you continue to keep the needs, concerns and perspectives of others in mind. This posture is one God calls His people to at all times, as seen when He speaks through Paul to the church at Phillipi: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:3-4, CSB).

Again, many thanks to all of you, for your faithful partnership in prayer, love, service and support. We are excited to see what the days ahead will bring, especially as we look to the One who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, (Ephesians 3:20, ESV). One last time (for now), Amen!

If you have any questions or need clarification, please feel free to contact Dan Arbitter (dan.arbitter@cbcjoy.org). We hope to see you Sunday morning for our Spring Business Meeting and Worship Service. Until then, God’s blessings to you!

COVID Update 05.15.21

Hello, Calvary Family!

This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance on the wearing of masks/facial coverings. On Friday, the Michigan Department of Health stated that they are updating the State’s Mask Mandate to align with the recent CDC guidance.

The Elders have approved the following changes to Calvary’s mask/facial covering protocols, effective Sunday, May 16, 2021.

  • For all persons of any age who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19:

    • Masks are no longer required to be worn for any indoor or outdoor ministry activity.

  • For persons who have not been fully vaccinated:

    • Masks are required for all persons (kindergarten aged and older) within common areas (hallways, lobbies, restrooms, etc.) or any other areas where social distancing of at least 6 feet cannot be effectively achieved.

    • Masks are recommended but not required once seated in the Auditorium, while on stage, or when seated in an adult-only classroom, as long as social distancing of 6 feet or greater can be maintained.

    • Masks are required for children and students while seated in their classrooms.

  • We are discontinuing the RSVP registration for our Sunday morning worship service.

If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact Dan Arbitter at dan@cbcjoy.org. And as always, we thank you for your continued support, prayers, grace, patience and understanding as we live out life together in our church family.

COVID Update: 03.18.21

Hello, Calvary Family!

This week, we achieved our first marker point of the Elder’s 3-phase plan to reduce our church’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Our state sustained 7-day rolling averages of COVID-related deaths per day below twenty (20), so we will enact Phase 1 of the protocol reduction plan. Starting Sunday, March 21, the following changes occur:

  • Discontinue temperature checks at entry doors.

  • Remove the health assessment as part of the online RSVP process.

  • Discontinue lobby reconfiguration and flow for social distancing.

  • Allow food, coffee, snacks, drinks, etc. to be provided by CBC.

  • Water fountains will be turned back on and available for use.

As a reminder, all of our marker points are related to the 7-day rolling average of COVID-related deaths per day in Michigan. Phases 2 and 3 of our reduction plan will take place when we see sustained daily averages of fifteen (15) for Phase 2 and ten (10) for Phase 3. Though they are not yet being enacted, the specific details for those subsequent reductions are detailed below.

Phase 2:

  • Discontinue RSVP process.

  • Continue to strongly encourage mask usage at all times but allow for masks/facial coverings to be removed while seated in services and classes.

  • Allow on-stage non-singing/speaking personnel to remove masks/facial coverings while on-stage.

Phase 3:

  • Continue to strongly encourage mask usage at all times, but not require masks/facial coverings in common areas (lobbies, entrances, etc.).

  • Continue to strongly encourage, but not require, masks/facial coverings while in classrooms (adults, students, children).

  • Discontinue front-to-back and side-to-side social distancing spacing limitations in classrooms, auditorium, meeting rooms and on-stage.

Please remember, you will be notified when we cross each of the marker points and reminded of the changes that will take place within each of the phases. If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact Dan Arbitter at dan@cbcjoy.org. And as always, we thank you for your continued support, prayers, grace, patience and understanding as we live out life together in our church family.

COVID Update: 03.13.21

Calvary Family,

Recently we updated you on our 3-phase plan to reduce our church’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols as the severity of the disease lessens. We mentioned that the Elders’ plan included marker points related to the 7-day rolling average of coronavirus-related deaths per day in Michigan. We also stated that our first phase of reductions will begin when we have achieved sustained 7-day averages below 20, with continued protocol reductions at 15 (Phase 2) and 10 (Phase 3).

At the time of our last communication, our state was hovering in the mid 30s to high 20s. This week, we have seen repeated days in the low 20s, continuing the positive trend that has we have been experiencing since early January. Below are the specific actions the Elders have agreed to take at each of the marker points related to the 7-day rolling average within Michigan:

Sustained Rolling Average of less than 20:

  • Discontinue the temperature checks at entry doors.

  • Remove health assessment as part of the online RSVP process.

  • Discontinue lobby reconfiguration and flow for social distancing.

  • Allow for food, coffee, drinks, etc. to be provided by CBC.

  • Turn back on water fountains

Sustained Rolling Average Less than 15:

  • Discontinue RSVP process.

  • Continue to strongly encourage mask usage at all times, but allow masks to be removed while seated in services and classes.

  • Allow on-stage non-singing/speaking personnel to remove masks while on stage.

Sustained Rolling Average Less than 10:

  • Continue to strongly encourage mask usage at all times, but not require masks in common areas (lobbies, entrances, etc.).

  • Continue to strongly encourage, but not require, masks while in classrooms (adults, students, children).

  • Discontinue front-to-back and side-to-social distancing spacing limitations in classrooms, auditoriums and on-stage.

Please note there are no additional COVID policies or mandated safety protocols beyond those listed above. When we achieve the less-than-10 marker point, they all will have been lifted.

We will specifically notify you when we cross each of these marker points and make you aware of changes that will take place within each of the phases. If you are interested in following the metrics daily, a convenient location is COVID-19 Data | ClickOnDetroit | WDIV Local 4

If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact Dan Arbitter at dan@cbcjoy.org. Thank you for your support, prayers, patience and understanding as we live out life together in our church family at this time.
